Names of God (part 3) 3.5.17

We have discovered the name of the Father is Yahweh (YHWH) or Yehovah (YHVH). Another form of His name is Yah (Strong's #H3050), which is used 49 times in the OT (Psalm 68:4, Isaiah 12:2, etc.).  This use of His name is in the word "Hallelujah" [or more correctly spelled HalleluYah] which we have always learned means "Praise God" or "Praise The Lord". If that were true it would be "HalleluEl" or "HalleluAdonai".  But the word "HalleluYah" is specific in which god is to be praised... "Praise Yah" (YHWH).

The last part of Proverbs 30:4 asks, "What is His son's name?"  That is what we want to look at today.  Of course the easy Sunday School answer is "Jesus"... but is it that simple?

Exodus 23:20-22 says, "Behold, I send an angel before thee, to keep thee by the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Take ye heed before him, and hearken unto his voice; provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgression: for my name is in him. But if thou shalt indeed hearken unto his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries."

In John 5:43, Jesus said, "I have come in My Father's name..."  Again, we must make a distinction between a name and a title. If He came in His Father's name, what part of "Jesus" do we get from "Yah", "Yahweh" or "Yehovah"? We must understand that the name "Jesus" is an English translation of a Latin translation of a Greek translation of Aramaic and Hebrew.

The Greek name for Jesus is Iesous (Strong's #G2424). But if we look directly at the Hebrew origins, we get something that sounds entirely different. We all know Matthew 1:21 from the "Christmas" story...

Because names have prophetic meanings, we can easily discover the Son's name because it is tied to "saving" or "salvation".  All we have to do is find out what Hebrew word means "to save" or "salvation".

It is the word "yasha" (Strong's #H3467) which is used 205 times in the OT and literally means "to be open wide or free...to be safe."  It is translated as save, savior, deliver, help, preserved, salvation, defend, rescue, etc.

So now that we know that "yasha" means salvation, we need to find out who is doing the saving to complete the name.  There are many verses throughout Scripture that describe God (the Father) as Savior. Let's look at Isaiah 45:20-25.

20 Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that carry the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save. 21 Declare ye, and bring it forth; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath showed this from ancient time? who hath declared it of old? have not I, Yehovah? and there is no God else besides me, a just God and a Saviour; there is none besides me. 22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else. 23 By myself have I sworn, the word is gone forth from my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. 24 Only in Yehovah, it is said of me, is righteousness and strength; even to him shall men come; and all they that were incensed against him shall be put to shame. 25 In Yehovah shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

So here we can clearly see that Yehovah, Yah, is our Savior (yasha). When we combine these words we get the name "Yehoshua" (Strong's #H3091) which simply means "Yehovah saves". The name "Yehoshua" comes out in English as Joshua (but remember there are no "J" sounds in Hebrew).

Just like the name Yehovah can be contracted to Yah, the name Yehoshua can be contracted to Yeshua. That, my friends, is the Son's name, our Messiah and Redeemer, which has been revealed throughout the entire Scriptures.  Matthew 1:21 makes more sense when we understand the significance of His name: "You shall call His name Yeshua, because Yah will save (yasha) His people from their sins."

Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of Yehovah shall be delivered...
Acts 2:21 (Peter quoting Joel) And it shall be, that whosoever shall call on the name of [Yehovah] shall be saved.
Romans 10:13 (Paul quoting Peter quoting Joel) Whosoever shall call upon the name of [Yehovah] shall be saved.

Have you called on His name for salvation? Do it today!
